Thousands, and possibly millions, of patients are convinced they`ll never recover which only adds to their sense of low-self esteem. Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the most popular as it encourages people to view their problems from a different perspective. It is one of the most successful therapies but not always available on a continuos basis which is essential if the patient is to benefit. People who struggle financially can find this particular therapy difficult to obtain on an ongoing basis as their appointments may be weeks apart. Wealthier people, of course, don`t encounter such problems as they have sufficient money for private treatment. Everybody would agree this is unjust but, regrettably, life is frequently unfair.

    Anger Isn’t Spiritual - How to Hide It Fast!

    The readers of this article can probably be divided into two main groups.

    Those who resonate with the title of this article and want to know how to hide and overcome such a shameful and primitive (uncivilised) emotion as anger.

    And those who are angry at me for even suggesting that it should be repressed.

    Bear with me for another moment, because just as the emotion of anger isn’t what it seems, neither is this article.

    A few days ago my own rage burst forth at the total lack of professionalism and common courtesy of a professional organisation I joined. They had cashed my payment immediately, but kept me waiting for the activated membership service for 10 weeks! Despite numerous calls and an email, the only indication that they had received and accepted my application was the fact that my bank balance was reduced.

    When my patience wore thin, I left a ’slightly’ less sugary monologue on their ever present answer phone. A few days later, I checked their website and was almost more furious to find that they had posted my details without even letting me know. I felt they owed me a bit of a human touch, maybe an apology. After all, they were supposed to be the ones controlling the professional standards of therapists who deal with the emotional and physical well-being of others.

    How could they be so rude! Instead of being happy that the deed was finally done, there was a nasty, angry little voice inside me - raving and ranting and jumping up and down like good old Rumpelstilzken in the fairy tale.

    For a few minutes I swam the angry tide, furiously paddling and thrashing inside, my inner dialogue dizzily drawing smaller and smaller circles. Then, I thought I’d better walk the talk, do as I preach in my seminars and figure out how this experience can help me make some personality progress.

    Here’s the method I use:

    First, I take a little inventory of what’s happening inside and notice whether my reaction is in proportion to the event. Are my emotions driving me forward to learn and make positive changes or are they dragging me into some dark dungeon where I wallow in my own self-pity until someone or something rescues me?

    Most of the time, when thoughts go round and round in circles, it is perfectly clear that they are not of the empowering, energising kind - so, the next step is to ask myself exactly which buttons this event has pushed.

    What did it remind me of? What previous experience (sometimes from way back when…) is it like? And exactly what does it feel like inside? I take my thoughts away from the event itself and focus on the physical sensations it’s causing inside me.
    Then, I make the conscious decision to transform and let go of this particular kind of energy.

    Sometimes, it’s as easy as concentrating on the fiery sensation the anger has caused and allowing it to cool and disperse. At other times, I need to play a few tricks on my mind to distract myself from my thoughts.

    What’s important is that I remind myself that the choice of wallowing or soaring is always mine. I can learn and move on or I can follow the downward spiral until I’ve hit the bottom and finally got the message.

    Next time someone or something really pushes your anger button, what will you choose? A new vision that lets you see the bigger picture of your own internal life, or just a blinding rage? If you go inside, you can emerge calmer, more positive, and lighter. Anger is a heavy load to carry. Isn’t it great to know that the choice to let go of it is yours?

    Depression Hurts, but You can beat it at its game.

    Thank God we have problems.
    No, that is not a misprint friend. It is true. Why? Because it means we are still alive and guess what, it means you are being made stronger. Granted, we all have problems, some big, some small; all a source of worry, anxiety and maybe even sadness. It is part of living. The truth is it is how we handle our difficulties and problems that can make or break us as humans. Difficulties should act as a spur for action, according to Charles de Gaulle: “Difficulties attracts the man of character because it is in embracing it that he realizes himself!”

    As powerful a grip as depression may have on you, as much as depression hurts and can make things seem hopeless, remember the quote above and make the steps to belittle the strength of this enemy of your happiness, before this foe called depression hurts you.

    I believe it’s been said that we only use about 10% of our brain and maybe even less when it comes to our problems, which in turn aggravates how much depression hurts or seems to affect us. If you truly look within and reach for the strength that lies inside of all of us, you will see that most problems are really only bigger than what they are. Truthfully we magnify their effects with pessimistic and hopeless thoughts.

    “Okay, Mr. “Big Shot”, you tell me how to go about overcoming my depression”
    I will do my best for you my friend, but promise that you will try what I tell you.

    To lessen the pain of depression and your problems, here are some tips for you.

    1. Think positively thoughts as much as is humanly possible. Always believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Remember: “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he…” If you think ‘it’ that things will improve, fate and the life forces around will be at your disposal to aid you to succeed.

    2. Watch what you utter and try as much as possible to say positive things about your life, the cause of your depression and situations. “Death and Life is in the power of your tongue (words), those who love its fruits (aware of its consequences) will eat from it. (enjoy…or well if negative, not enjoy…it)
    Speak to your situation by repeating positive affirmation aloud.

    3. Assess your problems and DO something about it. Try to figure out why it
    Occurred in the first place, learn from the situation and take the lesson as a learning experience you can draw from to make things better in the future.

    Now, since a common symptom of depression is a feeling of worthlessness, why not increase your self-worth and confidence by making yourself healthier. A healthy body equates to a healthy mind, and a healthy mind, friends, is a powerful one. Stronger than any hurt depression could bring your way, stronger than your problems, stronger than your pains. But, like any muscle, you’ve got to work at it to ‘make’ it strong.

    I mentioned getting healthy. Well we all know how; through a proper diet and exercise.
    The former will nourish and make you literally feel great and the latter, especially in regards to depression will exercise the motor centers of the brain, making the blood flow away from the emotional activity center; consequently you become more receptive to positive thoughts, which by the way is the first step to healing depression -there is a quote that supports this, it goes-”Be transformed by the renewing of your thoughts”
    Say that over and over, until it seeks into your subconscious.

    For those who believe in the existence of the Unseen yet the Omnipotent and Present One…God. A simple and straightforward prayer asking for His help can and will soothe the pain and challenges we may have to face in our lives. He has promised us two things when it comes to facing life’s ups and downs: “He will never give us more than we can handle” and to “Fear not for I am with thee, be not dismayed for I am thy God, I will help thee and strengthen and I will uphold you with my victorious right Hand!”. Indeed, these are powerful verses to keep in mind in coping with depression.

    I’m not saying things will be instantly better, hey Rome wasn’t built in a day friends.
    With anything in life, you have to work-not necessarily hard at it-but smarter and we all know you only get out of something what you put into it-actually, a lot more.

    Depression hurts, we know that; but now YOU can beat depression because you are stronger!

    Illegal Drug Usage And The Depressed

    Drugs might seem like a good idea sometimes. A little something to pick up your mood. Maybe to help out with your prescription, if those medicines don’t seem to be working like you want. This is a bad idea. And it is very easy to tell you to just say “no” to drugs. The reality is that doesn’t work. You might find yourself saying “yes” for various reasons, including trying to be accepted by others. Peer pressure seems harder to resist when you are so unsure of yourself.

    The most important thing to do is to talk with your therapist and mention any drugs that you have started doing. You might also want to talk to your doctor, as they may have effects on the medications that you are taking. Find out why you are starting these new habits and look at how they could cause problems in your life. You already suffer from depression, look at whether these will add to your problems in any way.

    If you find that you are easily addicted or start to need the drugs in any way, take yourself to an AA or NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meeting. They are easy to find, particularly in big cities, and are completely confidential. Share if you want, or just listen if you want. If you feel like it would be helpful, you can probably find someone there to talk to, get some help from. If you are addicted, then getting treatment is essential. Because they can affect your mood, and cause unintended side effects for your medication, you are risking more than you probably realize. Because you suffer from depression, and are more likely to make a self-destructive decision, you need to get help whenever you can.

    A suicide attempt a minute

    525,600 minutes and 531,000 suicide attempts per year in the US . 21% of 12 year olds are sexually experienced. Among high school students 27% smoke cigarettes, 36% were passengers with an intoxicated driver, 1/3 were drunk in the last month, 26% smoked marijuana, 16% had used inhalants to get high. Road rage and air rage are front page news. While media and peer influences, the high divorce rate, latch-key children, and drug availability are part of the problem, biology plays a far greater role than has been previously recognized.

    Public misconception, misinformation and prejudice are making the problem worse. Surgeon General Dr. Satcher is correct in stating that the stigma must be removed for mental disorders, as has been accomplished for cancer.

    The medical and mental health professions are not responding to evolving knowledge. Many physicians say things like “I don’t believe in depression” and deal with these individuals in a disparaging manner. Mental health practitioners contribute to the problem in four ways: 1) Not making all the diagnoses - in medical practice a person with high blood pressure and arthritis needs both problems treated. High blood pressure treatment would not be considered a failure if the arthritis symptoms continued, yet that’s exactly what happens in mental health. A medication for one problem is expected to treat all of them. Every problem a person has makes every other problem worse. All their diagnoses need to be treated comprehensively.

    2) Refusal to make diagnoses for fear of “labeling” someone. Many practitioners use their own criteria for making a diagnoses - like every internist defining diabetes in his/her own way. 3) Not keeping up with new information. Research is exploding, and many once held beliefs have turned out to be wrong. “Growing out of” Attention deficit disorder is a good example.

    4) Reluctance to try techniques from other practitioners. I have treated thousands of individuals with the borderline personality disorder (BPD), likely a form of epilepsy with mood swings, anger problems, self-destructiveness and psychotic rage under stress. Many tragedies such as school shootings are due to the BPD. Medication combinations work extremely well, but the research information is rarely acknowledged and many psychiatrists are resistant to trying medical approaches that have been successful for other doctors and their patients. The American Psychiatric Association has done an excellent job defining criteria for the major psychiatric diagnoses. Most Americans would be stunned to discover exactly how common these “disorders” are - and what the criteria are. More than one diagnosis is usually present. Many common diagnoses are likely not diseases at all, but survival genetics that have advantages in some environments and disadvantages in others. In today’s high pressure society, these genetic traits have tremendous problems - like having fair skin in a sunny environment.

    Attention deficit “disorder” is an excellent example. The brain location and some of the biochemistry have been identified. Untreated ADD usually leads to significant social and legal problems - particularly impulsive anger and substance abuse (30%). The “cognitive” generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) causes the individual to constantly worry and think. Being genetic it starts in childhood and continues through old age. These individuals always feel stressed, and commonly treat themselves with alcohol, food, and marijuana.

    The information to make a huge difference with all these problems is available right now. Most of these diagnoses are treatable with the right combination of medication and counseling/brain retraining. While more research is always needed, educating the public and doctors/mental health practitioners of what’s already known can be done immediately, as has been done for other medical problems. If we don’t, road rage and school shootings will stop being news.


    How To Fight Back When The Cloud Of Doom Descends On You

    I am one of those people who can easily slip into a very negative state of mind. The slightest knockback or problem can lead to a cloud of doom descending over me, a cloud which I find hard to push away and remove. This article looks at ways in which we can fight back, to quickly get us back into a happy mode.

    I used to be quite a fragile character, some would say that I was even scared of my own shadow. I was always paranoid that people were talking about me and laughing behind my back.

    Even though my parents are superb, I was not a happy child or a happy teenager. I am so unlucky you see or so I thought. I walked around as if the world owed me something and would often feel very sorry for myself. I was bullied at school, it was more mental bullying rather than anything physical. I am sure that most people also get bullied and deal with it. It would leave me in a state of panic and depression. Looking back I have to say I was a bit of a wimp in reality.

    I decided that enough was enough by my mid-twenties and decided it was time to toughen up. I could not continue to live my life as I had been, as I would probably be dead by the time I was fifty.

    I then went about a self-help program to increase my overall self-confidence and self-esteem. I wanted to learn more about stress-management, dealing with depression, relaxation and about how to become successful in life.

    What I found out over the next twelve to eighteen months would change my life forever.

    These are the things I had to do:

    I had to stop feeling sorry for myself. Yes I am not perfect but who is.

    I had to think in a more positive way.

    I had to stop worrying about the future.

    I had to stop caring what other people thought of me.

    I needed to smile more.

    I needed to learn to relax. I now use meditation for this purpose.

    I had to learn to like myself.

    I needed to become stronger to fight away the negative thoughts in my head.

    I needed to appreciate what I did have in life, rather than concentrating on what I had not.

    I started to implement the above and it helped me no end. That horrible cloud of doom, still descended however, around once a month. When it does descend, I now write two lists. What I am happy about in life and what I am sad or worrying about. I then analyse both lists and more times than not, I am actually over-reacting.

    In conclusion, life is a battle. There are good times and bad. We need to become strong and learn to think in a more positive way. We have to fight back against people who bully us and against the voices in our head who are trying to make us panic. This is not easy, however with determination people are able to turn their life around just like I have.

    I used to feel anger towards the people who bullied me at school. I now feel sorry for them. They are the bad apples and I prey for them. I prey that God will one day make them pure.
