Virgin Media Comes Out Victorious in Advertising Controversy with Sky

Sky Broadband recently filed a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) over the nature of Virgin Media’s latest advertising campaign.

Virgin Media, calling its fibre optic broadband a future-proof technology, claimed that it has been created especially keeping the internet in mind. The same campaign by Virgin Media also stated that internet service providers who use copper wire technology are not able to give the customers a distortion-free service with high signal strength and with the competence to download and transmit enormous amounts of data.

Sky is one of the service providers that use copper wire networks to provide broadband services to their customers. Sky found Virgin Media’s campaign offensive and questioned its right to call itself a better service provider than other service providers in the market. It also raised the issue of Virgin Media calling its service ‘future-proof’ even though Virgin Media had no real proof to substantiate this claim. Sky also said that Virgin’s claim of designing its fibre optic service with the internet in mind was baseless, as the internet succeeded fibre optic broadband and not the other way round.

However, the ASA did not find Virgin Media to be belittling its competitors and said that it was clear Virgin Media was only trying to highlight the fact that its fibre optic technology is a good option that consumers can try out.
